Bnei Mitzvah is celebrated according to the Jewish calendar on the  Shabbat following the 13th birthday plus one day. Our students must have an attendance record at TDRS for the two years prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

In the year prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah students join the appropriate class and learn through a uniquely Progressive Jewish educational method about T’fillah (prayer), Mitzvot (Jewish Commandments leading to modern ethics and values) and Tikkun Olam (Social Justice). They also have an individual learning plan which prepares them for Torah reading and helps them gain deeper understanding of their “own parsha”.

It is a very special year during which the students gain self confidence and a great sense of self identity as a young Jew. The actual service sees these young people stand before their family, friends, congregation and Torah as proud young women and men. Proud to be Jewish and proud to be part of the Temple David family.
